Driver restraint system malfunction keeps coming on since I purchased vehicle and hendrick BMW has tried to repair my car multiple times but issue. Errors related to the restraint system are a common issue for BMW, especially with cars made from 2000 onwards. When there is an issue with seat belts, a message will pop up on the iDrive display and warn the driver. Besides that, there will be an airbag warning light and a seatbelt warning light on the dashboard. On BMW vehicles Restraint System Malfunction warning message pops up, and the airbag light (SRS) turns on to warn the driver the airbags are not working properly and may not deploy in case of an accident.
15 hours ago The following message has appeared on the dashboard of my 2008 BMW 530d: 'Passenger restraint system malfunction'. The seat belt and airbag warning lights are also illuminated - what should I do? - For more news, reviews and Top Tens, visit https://www.honestjohn.co.uk.
BMW X5 owners have reported 49 problems related to seat belt (under the seat belt category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Failure Date: 03/10/2021
After the passenger would vacate the car the passenger seat belt alarm would come on and stay on till I would take action by hitting the seat with my palm. I tried three times in having the dealership to repair the seat pad sensor while it was under warranty, but they said they could not duplicate it. After the warrant expired I returned it the dealership and then they said it was a defective seat pad sensor. (ugh).

Spurious 'passenger not wearing seatbelt' alert when there is no passenger. Diagnosed as 'passenger seat mat sensor faulty' with a replacement cost of $2,498. 87. Should be covered by a recall as this is a safety issue. Apparently similar issue led to a recall in older BMW vehicles.
Failure Date: 07/24/2020
Passenger seat sensor for airbag has failed. Was told not covered under warranty or any recall, estimate of $2,200. Was told that safety system is now compromised for passenger.
Failure Date: 06/16/2020
Passenger seat - seat/airbag occupancy sensor failed. The airbag and seatbelt light remains lit. BMW said not covered under any warranty even though it's a safety issue. Estimated cost to repair - $3,000. Apparently airbag and seatbelt will not engage if sensor is not working.

The passenger seat weight occupancy sensor intermittently works. I am concerned if it is not working properly, the airbag may not deploy properly. Also, the seat belt warning light chimes even though the seat is not occupied.

Seat occupancy sensor broken and this seems to be an ongoing problem of BMW.

Three warning messages appear (I hve to click 'ok' to remove them) each time I start the car. The message is about the airbag, the belt tensioner, and the belt force limiter. This for the both the driver side and passenger side. I can still drive the car, but notice through expeimentation, that sometimes when I give a rapid tug on the shoulder belt it stops after a few inches (as it should) and sometimes it goes forward a couple of feet without any reistance. I have not done any other experimentation. This is true for the vehicle being stationary and in motion. Since the dealer wants $185 just to look (I am a few months out of warranty), I would first like to know if other people are having the same issue and their is the realistic possiblity of a recall. This would save me analysis and subsequent repair expenses.

Bww has an ongoing problem with its seat sensor mat. These sensors are critical to the safety of the front passenger in the event of an accident. BMW has only issued recalls for select model of its vehicle on this particular issue. It has failed to acknowledge that it is a widespread problem affecting all of its vehicles across years and models. I believe that the government should act to force BMW to take responsibility for its defective product. Human lives are being put in danger. Thank you.

Front passenger seat mat sensor faulty leaving the front passenger without airbag protection. I'll install a bypass device because they are common and inexpensive and available because so many Bmws have this issue. The bypass device will allow the passenger airbags to deploy whether a passenger is in the seat or not. The years 2006 and 2007 saw recall on the passenger seat sensor. This needs to be addressed.

Takata recall! my airbag seat keep on ringing to put seatbelt on when no one is sitting there, and the restraint warning on my tv screen won't go away. I'm afraid my seat will explode on us when we are on the road. They need to check it out, dangerous its better to save lives, then sorry.

Failure Date: 11/06/2017
A code is being thrown that translates to 'seat belt tensioner, driver's side'. I see a recall in your database for this issue and 2002 BMW X5's but when I call the dealership (BMW of the mainline) and provide them my VIN#, they said the recall doesn't cover my particular car. Unsure why that would be as I have the same problem w/the same year and model car as in this recall. Obviously, my car suffers from the same issue and should be recitified by BMW free of charge. Thanks.

I was driving on the freeway and alll of a sudden I received an audible and visual warning stating that the passenger restraint system malfunctioned. At the time, there were no passengers in the vehicle. This seems to be an occurring issue with BMW vehicles. I've had the same problem on two other vehicles.
Failure Date: 04/03/2017
The 3rd row seat belt on the left side (driver side) does not return by it self properly. This is, when you buckle up the seat belt does not return by it self properly so you have to push the remaining belt inside the side wall of the car because it stays loose not tight. I want to know if the dealer have to correct this issue even when the basic warrany is finished. It seems that the retractor is defective.

The driver seat belt on a brand new, BMW 2017 X5 xdrive 35i had a seat belt buckle that would rattle and shake when the driver was seated. The buckle would continue to rattle as the driver drove down the road. The buckle would rattle when the vehicle was stationary, in motion, or running. The buckle on the passenger side did not have this issue. It appears to be very dangerous to have a driver seat belt that is not properly manufactured.

The passenger occupancy sensor is defective and chimes continuously when unoccupied. The only way to disarm the chime is to buckle the passenger seat belt which activates the passenger airbags. Since this vehicle currently has several airbag recalls on it, the defective occupancy sensor creates a dangerous situation for myself and other owners of this same make and model.

My vehicle is BMW X5 30i 2009 model year. I suddenly had an error message on the dashboard screen saying 'pass restraint system faulty'. Dealer checked the problem and stated that this will not engage front passenger airbag and seatbelt restraint system if not fixed. Asked price was $1800 and paid $1500. Absurd price and should be covered by warranty -- its a safety system! I found out that there was an identical NHTSA recall on the same issue with other BMW vehicles just one or two years before this model year. The NHTSA recall code of that recall is 08v384000. I usually ride the car alone and have occasional passenger and never had any heavy load on the seat.

Tl-the contact owns a 2010 BMW X5. The contact stated that the air bag warning light and the passenger restraint system indicators were illuminated in the instrument panel. The dealer was notified of the failure. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not under recall. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 36,000. Ah.

I was driving my 2015 X5 (bought it new in March and the car only has 2599 miles right when the malfunction happened on Aug 8th 2015) to a local trader joe's after getting off from highway 101 when suddenly everything on the car failed. I was in the middle of a left turn and almost ran into the car next to me which also was turning left when the steering wheel became so stiff that I can hardly turn it. At the same time, the airbag malfunction light is on and the safety belt restraint system failed. The safety belt became so loose that it didn't even hold/restrain me during the turn. The speed meter also failed and it showed 0 and even though when I was driving. Other failures include headlight and turning light. The right turning would always turn itself on no matter what. I was able to park my car in a safe location but this really scared the t out of me. When I pressed the brake and the stop engine button, the car didn't even shut down the engine. Other failures include tpm malfunction, parking brake reduced, parking assistant malfunction and headlamp vertical aim control malfunction. It's been an hour since I called for a towing car and I'm waiting anxiously for it while my car has its engine on the whole time. I own a 2011 x3 and never had any problem with it. I bought this X5 in March and it only has 2599 miles on it. I can't imagine what would happen if everything failed just when I was driving on the 101 highway which is about 3 minutes before all of these happened. Does anyone know what I can do? I don't know if I can trust this car any more even if after they fix it. This is so dangerous and could be a disaster if it happened on the highway.

Takata recall. The contact owned a 2001 BMW X5. The contact stated that while driving at 25 mph, a coyote jumped in front of the vehicle. The contact attempted to void a crash and swerved causing an unknown rear wheel to detach from the vehicle. The vehicle then flipped over several times and crashed upside down into the side of a residential home. A police report was not filed. The air bags failed to deploy. The seat belt failed to restrain the contact who was ejected from the vehicle when the impact occurred. The contact sustained internal bruising that required medical attention. The vehicle was towed to a collision center but was not diagnosed. The vehicle was later towed to the contacts residence. The vehicle was destroyed. The contact later received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 17v047000 (air bags). The failure mileage was not available. Parts distribution disconnect.

BMW passenger seat airbag/seat restraint system has a malfunction. The system says there is a problem with the passenger seat and/or airbag restraint system or seatbelt or belt tensioners. There is a red light on the dash indicating failure of the system. This light comes and goes. Sometimes the light comes on even when no one is in the seat. I've googled this and it seems a lot of people are having the same issue with this. I'm not sure if the airbag is really effected or if it is a sensor malfunction. I see there are similar complaints listed here for this same issue.

Front passenger seat belt is installed incorrectly within the b pillar causing the belt to be twisted and interferes with the speed and totality of the belt's retraction. I noted this to the salesman at new vehicle delivery and was told it was not a safety concern and that they'd fix it at the next service appointment. At the service appointment, I complained again about the twisted seat belt and was first accused of twisting the seat belt. The BMW techs attempted to 'untwist' the seat belt and told me that they had fixed it. Upon return of the vehicle, the passenger seat belt stopped retracting properly and is still twisted. This defect applies to all states of vehicle operation and dealer has failed to rectify the situation on two occasions. I do not trust the seat belt was engineered to withstand an accident while installed backwards and certainly not with a folded/twisted/kinked belt. I now believe this to be a serious safety concern because BMW has failed to rectify this factory defect which seems to crease and cause irreparable harm to the seat belt, being retracted in such a state. I do not want a passenger injured or killed because of a factory defective seat belt which I have attempted to rectify since taking delivery of this custom-ordered vehicle in 10/2015. 3 photos of improperly installed front passenger seat belt included. Photo of properly functioning driver's side seat belt included for comparison.

My son lean forward and turned left to grap an item from my daughter in the back seat. All of the sudden the passenger safety restraintment system malfunction light came on. Now it comes on continuously when a front seat passenger moves slightly. I researched online and noted that recall has been done for numerous BMW cars, but just not my year model. I believe this is manufacture defect and they should fix it.
Failure Date: 08/05/2014
I get the seat belt on light and something similar to that but with the airbag light on. This is only on the front passenger side. No passenger but light is on with the chime as well.
